Why is typography so important for brochure design?

Typography is certainly one of the most important aspects of the overall design and layout of a brochure. Even the most beautifully designed brochure won’t look impressive if the text used in it is not formatted and laid out in an impressive and eye-catching manner. The message or information contained in a brochure is basically in the form of text and therefore presenting the text in the most attractive manner is extremely important.

It helps create a special feel

What’s more, the different typefaces have unique characteristics and can offer a certain feel to the text when used appropriately. This can affect the very perception of the piece in the minds of readers. For instance, using a more friendly and casual typeface for coffee table brochures and using more formal and elegant looking typefaces for luxury products brochure printing will create a different ‘feel’ for each.

Using the basic principles of good typography

There are certain basic rules of typography which if followed sensibly can enhance the look and feel of the type and the overall brochure design. Following are the most prominent ones:

  • Consistency: Maintaining a certain consistency in the various formatting elements of type such as the size variations, leading, kerning, styles, bullets, etc. is important to make the brochure type look balanced as well as easy to read and understand.
  • Hierarchy: Keeping the right hierarchy is important in order to make sure that the text is presented according to its importance. For instance, the title or heading of the page should be placed in the top with a larger and bold typeface followed by the body copy, subheadings, etc.
  •  Alignment: It is important to align the text and paragraphs on the page properly to the page and to each other to make it look balanced and attractive.
  • Moderate use of typefaces: Too many typefaces can make the brochure pages look cluttered and amateurish. It is therefore best to stick to just 2-3 fonts, one for the heading and subheadings and one for the body copy with an occasional font for some special text that you want to make stand out from the rest.
